In a new job: Be genuine & Be yourself

Being authentic is the master key to a positive life and career.

The early days in a new position can be nerve-wracking but what your manager and colleagues are looking for is really quite simple: that you will be good to work with, willing to take instructions and eager to learn.

These features are just as important, or more so, than a certificate in some technical skill.

Concentrate your energy on the things that matter, the things that will earn you respect as an effective employee and colleague. Don’t confuse popularity with success. Choose being respected rather than being popular.

To be yourself, know yourself! Your reaction to different circumstances in life will tell you about your character, your strengths and the things you need to improve. Self-awareness is one of the most important qualities you can have.

Honesty is the best policy. Be transparent and honest with the people around you. Look within yourself at your own flaws and mistakes and own them. It is refreshing to meet people who accept responsibility and accountability for their actions.

Honest and open people are the ones most likely to be trusted with senior responsibilities.
